Sheikh Kamal sports’ medal to be introduced: Russell

DHAKA, Aug 5, 2019(BSS)- State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell today said they have a plan to introduce Sheikh Kamal Medal in sports in remembrance of great contributions of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He said this after the inauguration ceremony of Sheikh Kamal “uddipto tarunner dut” a day-long newspaper photo exhibition, organized by Joyeta Prokashoni on occasion of Sheikh Kamal’s 71st birthday at Abahani Limited club premise today.

The state minister said Sheikh Kamal was not only a sportsman but also a great sports organiser and to remember his outstanding contributions they have a plan for introducing a ‘Sheikh Kamal Medal’.

Russell said Sheikh Kamal was an open minded person having versatile talent. He had an active presence in the liberation war, student politics, cultural activist and sports organiser.

Though killers’ killed him on August 15 in 1975 but still he is immortal in country’s sports.

The state minister also inaugurated the cover of a commemorative book and visited the exhibition.

Editor of the book “uddipto tarunner dut” and Chairman, Canadian University of Bangladesh Chowdhury Nafis Sorafat, Bangladesh Awami League Youth and Sports Affairs Secretary Harunur Rashid, Bangladesh Football Federation’s president Kazi Mohammad Salahuddin, “swadhin bangle football team” manager Tanvir Majhar Tanna and Awami League Youth and Sports sub committee’s member Mohammad Faisal Ahmed Ullah were present on the occasion.

Sheikh Kamal was one of the pioneers of modern football in Bangladesh and also founder-president of Abahani Krira Chakra.

He used to play cricket in the first division for Azad Boys Club and Basketball too in the first division for Spurs Club.

Kamal was also a founder-member of Dhaka Theatre and Spondon Shilpa Gousthi, a musical band of folk songs.
