Govt won’t tolerate extortion at Karwan Bazar: Home Minister

DHAKA, August 4, 2019 (BSS) – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan today warned that the government will not tolerate any kind of extortion in the city’s Karwan Bazar.

The minister came up with the warning while addressing a cleanliness drive at city’s Karwan Bazar organised by the Department of Environment (DoE).

Warning extortionists, the minister said, “I clearly said if you (extortionists) don’t stop extortion then leave Karwan Bazar…Stern actions will be taken against those involved in extortion in the area.”

Before the Awami League come to power, the minister said, at least one murder incident used to take place every month at Karwan Bazar. “But, it has stopped now following the government’s initiative.”

Replying to a query on missing of a senior journalist of a private television Mohona, the minister said necessary instructions have already been given to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gulshan zone of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mostaque Ahmed, adding that “We hope that we will able to find out him quickly.”

Meanwhile, Referring to widespread use of polythene bags is the prime cause of water logging across the country, including the capital, the Home Minister said, “We have to face critical environmental disorder in future if we do not stop the use of polythene bags.”

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister M Shahab Uddin chaired the meeting while Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar spoke as the special guest.

Environment Secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury, Director General of the Department of Environment (DoE) Dr AKM Rafique Ahammad and Karwan Bazar business leaders, among others, spoke on the occasion.
