Jute harvesting gets momentum in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Aug 3, 2019 (BSS) – Harvesting of jute in all the six upazilas of
the district has gained momentum as a result of the recent adequate
rainfalls.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the farmers are now
engaged in separating fibers with much enthusiasm for getting lucrative
prices of jute this season.

A good number of newly harvesting jute have started coming to the local
markets.

The farmers are happy with the prevailing price of jute. The newly
harvested jute is being sold at Taka 1500 to 1600 per mound (40-Kg) depending
on their varieties and qualities.

The market is expected to be flooded with new jute within 15 to 20 days as
only 20 to 30 percent harvest of the cash crop has so far been completed in
the district.

During the current season, the farmers brought 3,750 hectares of land
under jute farming fixed by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

Talking to BSS, DAE Deputy Director Shovan Kumar Dhar said adequate
rainfalls in the last couple of weeks have helped the farmers harvesting
their jute timely. He also said the present government has given the maximum
priority to an increase jute production as to establish back the glory the
golden fiber of Bangladesh.

All necessary measures are being taken for making the farmers habituated in
promoting high yielding jute varieties for boosting its production, DD of DAE
added.
