Physically Challenged Cricket team to leave for UK to play World Series

DHAKA, Aug 1, 2019 (BSS)- A 16-member Physically Challenged Cricket team
of the Bangladesh cricket Board (BCB) will leave Dhaka on Friday to play a
five-nation Physical Disability World Series, organized by the England and
Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India and Pakistan will battle for
championship in the tournament, which will be held from August 5 to 15 to
mobilize support for the cricketers with disabilities, who continue to defy
odds and physical challenges to play cricket.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is sponsoring the
team, while the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been extending its
technical support since the team’s formation.

Drupam Patranabish is the captain and Masud Hasan remains the team
manager; supervised by coach Rashed Iqbal.

Currently, active training camps are underway at the Bangladesh Krira
Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP) sports institute for the BCB Physically Challenged
Cricketers to be able to represent Bangladesh in the upcoming World Series.

In Bangladesh, people with physical disabilities often face societal
barriers and disability evokes negative perceptions and discrimination.
Because of the stigma associated with disability, they are often excluded
from education, employment and community life which deprives them of
opportunities essential to their social development, health and well-being.

“With its long-standing partners, the ICRC has been organizing and
supporting various sports activities since 2013 to transform community
attitudes about them by highlighting their capabilities, including the
organization of a multi-national cricket tournament in 2015, supporting
disabled cricket teams to attend national & international tournaments in the
UK and the UAE while allowing people with physical disabilities to be as
active as non-disabled people.

The ICRC remains committed to promote social inclusion activities for
people with physical disabilities through sports engagement together with the
active support from all concerned stakeholders, including the BCB,” says
Gérard Peytrignet, head of the ICRC in Bangladesh.

Earlier in April this year, a 10-over friendship match was held in Dhaka
between national cricketer and cricketers with disabilities to raise
awareness for people with physical disabilities in continuation of ICRC’s
endeavor to promote social inclusion through cricket.
