Revenue collection by NBR totals Tk 2.23 lakh crore in FY19

DHAKA, July 31, 2019 (BSS) – The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman
Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan today said that the revenue collection by the
Board in the last fiscal year (FY19) totaled Taka 2,23,892 crore which was
10.7 percent higher than Taka 2,05,356 crore fetched in FY18.

The NBR Chairman said this while addressing a press conference held at the
NBR building in city’s Segunbagicha area today.

Mosharraf said the government could not achieve the revenue collection
target of Taka 2,80,063 crore in the last fiscal since it had to give VAT
exemption in various sectors associated with the implementation of mega
projects as well as duty exemption on import of a number of items.

According to the NBR, of the overall revenue collection in the last fiscal
year (FY19), collection from income tax accounts for 32.6 percent of the
total revenue generation with Taka 72,899.90 crore, the VAT represents 39.1
percent of the total revenue collection with Taka 87,610.36 crore while
customs accounts for 28.3 percent of the overall revenue mobilization
fetching Taka 63,382.16 crore.

Clarifying the reason for comparatively less revenue collection in the
last fiscal year, the NBR Chairman said the government had to provide Taka
15,192.06 crore VAT exemption in some specific areas like gas, internet,
export-oriented RMG, solar module, travel agent, baby lotion, Hawai sandals
and computer accessories.

Side by side, he said around Taka 1,502 crore duty exemption was given on
capital machineries, baggage rules, mobile manufacturing, relief goods, ship,
BEZA and to diplomatic missions.

Hoping that the collection from VAT would increase to a big extent with
the effectiveness of the new VAT law from July 1, this year, he informed that
some 10 lakh Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) would be installed within the
next two years to boost the revenue collection.
