Taka 45-lakh saplings sold in Rajshahi tree fair

RAJSHAHI, July 30, 2019 (BSS)- More than 65,000 saplings of fruit, timber trees, medicinal and ornamental plants worth around Taka 45 lakh were sold in Rajshahi divisional tree fair.

Divisional Forest Officer Niamur Rahman revealed this while giving his welcome speech in the closing session of the fair here yesterday.

Social Forestry Division (SFD) and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) jointly organized the 20-days long fair in association with district administration at Green Plaza of Rajshahi City Corporation.

City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the closing ceremony as the chief guest, stressed the need on extensive tree plantation to improve environment and biodiversity to make the region habitable for all.

“Expansion of the country’s forest area up to 25 percent of the total landscape through extensive tree plantations will protect the country from adverse impact of climate change,” said Liton.

Explaining various beneficial aspects of trees and homestead gardening in human life, he urged all to plant at least three tree saplings on their homesteads to help maintain environmental and ecological balance.

Mayor Liton urged all to plant fruit saplings around their respective homesteads or on any open space to help maintain environmental and ecological balance and save the region from the wrath of any future natural catastrophe.

With District Administrator Hamidul Haque in the chair, the ceremony was addressed, among others, by Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Nisharul Arif, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Ameer Jafar, DAE Deputy Director Shamsul Haque and President of Nursery Owners Association Shaheduzzaman Sarker.

Later, the guests distributed prizes among three nursery owners- Liza, Metropolitan and Briksha Bazar- as recognition to their clinching the first, second and third positions among the participants in the fair.

Various government and non-government organizations and individuals including nursery owners and local entrepreneurs took part in the fair through setting up 47 stalls.
