Vested quarters spreading rumours to make country unstable: IGP

DHAKA, July 24, 2019 (BSS)- Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary today said that vested quarters are spreading rumours on social media sites, including Facebook, to make the country unstable.

“For spreading rumours, a total of 60 Facebook accounts, 25 YouTube channels and 10 online news portals have been made offline,” he said while addressing a press conference at the media centre of the Police Headquarters in the city.

A total of 31 cases have been filed and 103 people have been arrested so far for spreading rumours and mob-beating incidents, he said.

Eight people were killed in the incidents of mob beating across the country, none of them were involved in child abduction, he said, adding that even those, who were injured in mob-beating, have not been accused of abducting children.

Everyone involved in such kind of incidents, will be brought under the purview of law as they took the laws of the country into their own hands, he added.

The offenders involved in mass-beating will be found out by law enforcers to inflict capital punishment on them, he said.

He said a week-long campaign against rumours and mass beating will start tomorrow.

As part of the campaign, police will hold meetings in every district, thana and metropolitan area and exchange views with teachers, students and guardians of different schools, colleges and madrasas to rid the common people of panic, he continued.
