Flood situation worsens further in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, July 24, 2019 (BSS) – Flood situation has worsened further in Nilphamari district as water level of the river Teesta at the Nilphamari point is flowing by 35 cm above its danger mark.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md Rabiul Islam told BSS that, “Water level of Teesta Barrage point of the river Teesta is flowing by 35cm above its danger level.” Water level at the Teesta river has increased sharply due to onrush of water from upstream region, he added.

Rabiul said all gates at the Teesta barrage have been opened for containing flood situation in the Nilphamari district.

The Brahmaputra, Dharla, Teesta, Ghaghot and Surma-Kushiyara rivers are in rising trend, according to a bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) issued here today.

According to representatives of local government bodies, onrush of water from upstream region and heavy rainfall triggered floods in 15 villages under Dimla upazila in the district creating sufferings of several thousands of people.

Alongside taking initiatives to check damages of embankments, adequate relief materials have been kept ready to aid the flood victims. Officials of Water Development Board have remained alert to deal with emergency situation of flood.
