Sports fraternity pays homage to Ajoy Barua

DHAKA, July 21, 2019 (BSS)-Country’s Sports fraternity on Sunday paid
homage to eminent sports journalist Ajoy Barua who died in London on July 12
while covering the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Family sources said he was hospitalised with cold related complications.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Barua’s body was brought to Bangladesh on Sunday after which it was
taken to National Press Club. Thereafter his body was taken to Dainik
Sangbad, his workplace where had worked from 1974 until his death.

The eminent journalists body was then taken to Bangabandhu National
Stadium, his daily workplace where different sports associations, eminent
sport personalities paid their last respect to him.

The speakers also spoke, recalling his contribution towards the sports
as a journalist.

Bangladesh Sports Journalist Association (BSJA), National Sports Council
(NSC), Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA), Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB),
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF),
Bangladesh Archery Federation, Bangladesh Athletics Federation, CCDM, Dhaka
Mohanagori Football League Committee, Sonali Otit Club, Abahani Fans Club,
Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA), Bangladesh Sports Journalist
Community (BSJC) and the officials of other organization paid tribute with
placing floral wreaths on the coffin of the body before observing one-minute
silence to pray for the salvation of the departed soul.

Thereafter his body was then taken to Basabo for cremation.

Ajoy Barua, a freedom fighter was member of Jatiya Press Club, Dhaka
Reporters Unity, Bangladesh Sports Journalist Forum and Chattogram Journalist
Forum, among others.

He started his career in 1974 as a sports reporter for Dainik Sangbad.
He went on to win ‘Blue Award’ from the Dhaka University.

Ajoy Barua was born on September 1, 1947 at Hathazari upazila in
Chattogram.
