HC not to interfere in Rifat murder case probe

DHAKA, July 18, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today refused to interfere in the police probe into Barguna Rifat murder trial.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the observations while a Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Faruk Hossain drew court’s attention on this issue.

Referring reports of different dailies’ the lawyer said Rifat’s widow Ayesha Siddiqa Minni, who is also number one witness in the case, has been arrested and placed on five-day remand.

“The court should look into the matter. Even no lawyers are willing to defend her case at the court,” Faruk said.

The High Court in reply said it cannot interfere in the police probe.

“Let the probe to go on, but she is a witness. In spite of this, she has been taken into remand,” Advocate Faruk Hossain said.

The High Court then said Minni has been arrested and police said they have specific allegation against her.

“You have to come through a proper channel. We cannot interfere in police investigation,” the High Court said.

A youth named Rifat Sharif was hacked to death in broad daylight in Barguna on June 26. Police on July 16 showed his wife Minni arrested in the case and a court on July 17 placed her on five-day remand.
