Speaker highlights the need of women empowerment

NEWYORK, July 16, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today underscored the need for implementing women’s empowerment to achieve the UN’s ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’ goal within 2030.

“Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has adopted development policies for gender equality and woman empowerment…It is high time to implement them to achieve the goals within the stipulated time,” an official press release quoted her saying that at the panel discussion titled as ‘Gender Equality and unified society for the sustainable world’.

The panel discussion was a part of the informal discussion of world leaders on ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment for sustainable World’.

“Bangladesh is the role model of women’s empowerment. …from our Prime Minister to Parliamentary Officials and Ministers, from UN peacekeeping mission to garments industry- our women are brilliantly performing their duties in individual sectors,’ she said highlighting outstanding contribution of women in different fields of development.

She stressed the need to strengthen the global leader’s roles in promoting gender equality and preventing violation against woman, added the release.

Later, Shirin participated in the panel discussion on ‘Growing inequalities and distrust in Government: Breaking the cycle” organized by the UN’s High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

There, she said that the importance of education and technical knowledge is crucial. She also said that the Parliament has a strong role to play in identifying and eradicating the inequality and urged the parliamentary members to remain alert and active.

The Inaugural speech was presented by the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Chairman Gabriela Cuevas Barron.

Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen and Jatiya Sangsad Senior Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan were also present, among others.
