National Fisheries Week begins tomorrow

DHAKA, July 16, 2019 (BSS) – The National Fisheries Week will begin across
the country tomorrow aims at creating awareness among mass people to produce
more fish with proper use of water-bodies and protect indigenous fish species
from extinction.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to officially inaugurate the week
by releasing fries at a lake of Ganabhaban on Thursday, the second day of the
Fisheries Week.

On the day, the premier will award ‘National Fisheries Award-2019’ to 17
selected organisations and persons for their outstanding contribution to the
sector.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separated
messages on the occasion.

“The government has taken and implemented enormous plans, including fish
culture extension, release of fries in open water bodies, development of fish
habitats, installation of fish sanctuaries and training programmes for fish-
farmers and fishermen in order to develop the fisheries sector,” said the
President.

“Bangladesh has incurred 3rd position in inland open water fish production
and 5th position in fish production in enclosure as per a report titled ‘the
State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2018’ designed by the Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations,” said Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina in her message.

To mark the week, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Ashraf Ali
Khan Khosru will address a press conference at the Department of Fisheries
(DoF) at 11 am tomorrow.

Earlier, a colourful procession will be brought out from the Department of
Fisheries at 8am.

A weeklong fish fair will begin on the premises of Krishibid Institute of
Bangladesh (KIB), Farmgate in the city tomorrow.
