Ensure procurement of paddy directly from farmers, Majumder asks DCs

DHAKA, July 16, 2019 (BSS) – Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder today
urged all the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to instruct field level officials to
ensure that paddy is procured directly from farmers to meet the government’s
paddy procurement target.

The minister came up with the call while speaking at the third day of the
annual conference of the DCs at the Secretariat here.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the conference, Majumder said:
“We are procuring paddy directly from farmers. The government has so far
procured 1.15 lakh tonnes of paddy against the target of four lakh tonnes”.

“We have instructed the DCs to direct the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs)
to ensure that paddy is being procured directly from farmers,” he added.

About the government’s preparedness to deal with the country’s ongoing
flood, the food minister said Bangladesh has the capacity enough to tackle
any flood situation and that is why there is no reason to be panic.

“There will be no food crisis in the country after the flood. We have
enough food grains in stock…we are ready to deal with any situation,” he
said.

Stressing the need for setting up a safe food office in every district
aiming to ensure safe food for all, Majumder said the DCs were asked to take
stern actions against food adulterators to protect public health.

During the meeting, he said, the DCs proposed setting up warehouses and
safe food offices in different places, but the government has already taken a
project to do so.
