Teesta at Nilphamari flowing 15cm below danger mark
NILPHAMARI, July 15, 2019 (BSS) – Water level of the river Teesta at the
Nilphamari point is flowing by 15 cm below its danger mark showing an
improvement sign as the char areas of the district were badly affected by
floodwater.
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md Rabiul Islam told BSS
that, “Water level of the Teesta at Nilphamari point is flowing by 15cm below
its danger mark. If water level in the Teesta continues to fall, flood
situation may improve in Nilphamari district.”
According to representatives of local government bodies, onrush of water
from upstream region and heavy rainfall triggered floods in 15 char areas
under Nilphamari district leaving over 2,0000 families marooned. Floodwater
started to recede from 15 char areas in the district as waterlevel in the
Teesta river is in falling trend, they added.
Low-lying areas in the district were flooded as water levels in the major
rivers rose sharply, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, executive engineer of Water
Development Board of Nilphamari said.
Alongside taking initiatives to check damages of embankments, adequate
relief materials have been kept ready to aid the flood victims. Officials of
Water Development Board have remained alert to deal with emergency situation
of flood.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Shahinur Alam said, “A total of 150 tonnes of
rice, 1500 packets of dry food and Taka two lakh were allocated for Dimla
upazila. We have started distribution of these relief materials among the
flood-hit people.”
“We have sought 500 tonnes of rice, Taka five lakh and 2,000 packets of dry
food for the flood affected people of the district,” he added.
