Trade leaders call for steps to attract foreign investors in Rangpur

RANGPUR, July 15, 2019 (BSS) – Newly elected Chamber leaders of Rangpur called for making faster the process of improving regional connectivity and turning Syedpur Airport an international one to attract foreign investors and boost up the region’s promising economy.

Improving regional connectivity and upgrading Syedpur Airport to international one would welcome local and foreign investors in the potential zone, they said.

“Rangpur should be made ready for full activation of the proposed Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) connectivity,” said Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu, newly elected president of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

“Along with capacity building of Syedpur Airport for cargo handling, the work for turning the 139-km Hatikumrul-Rangpur national highway to six-lane should be expedited,” Titu said in a recent talk with BSS at RCCI office.

Agriculture based Rangpur economy is also very prospective for multi-dimensional agro-based, light engineering and other industries, he said.

Plenty of huge agro-products as raw materials can attract local and foreign investors to establish agro-based and other industries in the region, he observed.

Senior vice-president of RCCI Mostoba Hossain Ripon appreciated the present government’s initiative for upgrading Syedpur Airport and turning the Hatikumrul-Rangpur national highway into six-lane.

Former President of RCCI Md. Abul Kashem said Rangpur has huge prospect of fertilizer and pesticide industries, considering their huge demand in the region for agriculture.

Former FBCCI vice-president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu also laid importance on necessary infrastructure development as the government is going for setting up a special economic zone in Rangpur.

The IT Park in Rangpur with an aim to create 5,000 jobs would encourage the private investors to launch joint ventures in this sector in Rangpur region, Babu hoped.

He also laid importance on taking necessary steps to motivate local and foreign investors to come forward to explore potential of Uttara EPZ and five major land ports of Rangpur region.
