Flood situation deteriorates further in Lalmonirhat

LALMONIRHAT, July 13, 2019 (BSS) – Flood situation has worsened further as water levels of two major rivers — Teesta and Dharala — are increasing gradually due to incessant rainfall and onrush of water from upstream region.

Water Development Board sources said water level of Teesta river at Doani point is flowing above 50cm above its danger mark. Sharp rising of water levels in two major rivers – Teesta and Dharala — inundated most parts of the Lalmonirhat district, leaving 40,000 people marooned.

The authorities are trying to contain floodwater through opening of 44 gates of Teesta Barrage. Most flood affected areas are Dahogram-Angarpata of Patgram upazila, Chardahgram, Saniajan, Gaddimari and Patikapar of Hatibandha upazila, Pashimkasirampur of Kaliganj upazila and Kalmati, Rajpur, Tajpur and Bangram of Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.

Ali Haidar, an official of district Relief and Rehabilitation officers of Lalmonirhar, said a total of 110 tonnes of GR rice and Taka 2.5 lakh have been allocated for flood-hit people. “We have started distributing these relief materials and cash among the flood-affected people,” he added.
