Teesta flowing 20 cm above danger level

NILPHAMARI, July 11, 2019 (BSS) – At least 15 villages of Dimla and Jhaldhaka Upazilas of Nilphamari district were inundated as water level of the Teesta River is rising constantly due to incessant rain and upstream water flow.

Teesta River was flowing 20-centimetre above the danger level this afternoon at Teesta Barrage point, according to Water Development Board flood forecasting and warning center.

Local people said more than ten thousand families of 15 villages including Purbo chatnai, Khagakhgaribari, Tepakharibari, Khalisha Chapani, Goyabari of Dimla Upazila and Golmunda Union of Jhaldhaka Upazila were marooned in flood water.

Chairman of Tepakharibari Union said they are working for shifting 2,000 families to a safer place. About 900 families of Jharsingheswar and Purbo Chatnai have taken shelter on embankment.

Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Abdullah al Mamun said they opened the shutters of all 44 gates of Teesta Barrage and monitoring the situation round the clock.

Water Board is trying to protect the vulnerable point of the barrage to protect from further damage.
