AGREEMENT-ASHULIA-EXPRESSWAY

Deal signed to appoint consultant for Dhaka-Ashulia expressway

DHAKA, July 11, 2019 (BSS) – The government today signed a Taka 304.15 crore deal with a Spanish company to hire a consultant for reviewing the design and monitor the construction work of the Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway.

In presence of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) inked the deal with Tecnica Y Proyectos S.A (TYPSA), Spain at the Setu Bhaban in the city’s Banani area.

DOHWA and DDC, Bangladesh will also work under TYPSA, said a press release.

BBA Chief Engineer Quazi Muhammad Ferdous and TYPSA Managing Director Antonio Rodriguez Castellanos signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.

Bridges Division Senior Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, project director of Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway Md Shahabuddin Khan, project director of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Md Shafiqul Islam and officials concerned were present in the deal signing function.

Later, Quader informed journalists that about Taka 17,000 crore will be spent in constructing the 24-kilometer-long elevated expressway from Airport to Dhaka EPZ via Abdullahpur-Dhour-Boro Ashulia-Zirabo-Baipail.

Of the total amount, Taka 11,000 crore will come from project assistance and Taka 6,000 from the government treasury, he said.

Under the project, a three-kilometer-long four-lane bridge will be built instead of existing road embankment in Ashulia for the sake of environment and 14-kilometer road under the expressway will be upgraded to four-lane, the minister added.

Two flyovers will be constructed in Nabinagar under Savar upazila while length of each flyover will be one kilometer, Quader said, adding that 18 kilometers drainage will be constructed along both sides of the expressway.

The Bangladesh government and Chinese government are implementing the projects on government to government (G2G) basis to ease the city communication with Ashulia industrial area and EPZ.

Commercial agreement has already been signed while loan agreement will be signed soon.

The road transport and bridge minister hoped that the main construction work of the project will begin by December next.

Responding to a query, Quader said those, who are spreading rumour about Padma Bridge construction, will be brought under the legal action. “They must face music,” he added.
