Rhodes leaves Bangladesh tonight

DHAKA, July 11, 2019 (BSS) – Steve Rhodes leaves Bangladesh tonight for London at his home, three days after he parted ways with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through a ‘mutual consent.’

Rhodes was supposed to be Bangladesh’s head coach till 2020 World T20 in Australia but following the national team’s ordinary performance in the 2019 World Cup, the BCB decided not to renew his contract.

The BCB said the separation between the two parties was done in mutual understanding.

Along with Rhodes, BCB also didn’t give fast bowling coach Courtney Walsh and physio Thihan Chandramohan an extension after their contract was expired following the World Cup.

Bangladesh, eying to seal a semifinal berth, finished eighth position in the 10-team tournament, winning just three matches out of nine. They lost five matches and one was washed out without a ball being bowled.

BCB didn’t reveal the reason behind the termination of Rhodes from the head coach post but it is widely believed, being a gentleman, Rhodes had little control over the players, a thing that BCB didn’t like.

However BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon had recently said, the thinking process between the board and Rhodes was different,

“It is normal practice that every board goes through an evaluation after a big tournament. He (Rhodes) had different process, which I didn’t say is bad but we didn’t like his process. That’s why we thought it is the time to think about alternative option,” Nazmul said in London while watching the match between the parliamentary team of Bangladesh and Pakistan.

But Nazmul said they had given an option to Rhodes to stay here, though he didn’t elaborate what the option was.

“We didn’t sack him actually. We gave him an option but he seemed not to be interested with it.”
