HC acquits 3 death-row-convicts in child murder case
DHAKA, July 9, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court today acquitted three, who have
been earlier sentenced to death by a lower court in a case lodged over murder
of one-and-a-half-year-old boy Dipjol in Mollahat, Bagerhat.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Krishna Debnath and Justice
Shahidul Karim passed the order, rejecting Death Reference for Latifa Begum,
34, her lover Monir Molla, 44, and Monir’s sister Nazma Begum, 30.
Of the three, Latifa is the mother of the murdered boy.
“The convicts were acquitted as there was discrepancy in the statements
and information given by the prosecution witnesses. We would file appeal
against this verdict,” deputy attorney general MA Mannan Mohan said.
According to the case documents, Latifa had an extramarital affair with
Monir Molla and killed her own child in 2005 with the help of the other two
to clear path to marry her lover.
Bagerhat Session Judge Court on April 20, 2014, sentenced the three to
death.
