DHAKA, July 9, 2019 (BSS) – As Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided to terminate its head coach Steve Rhodes contract on Monday with immediate effect, suddenly the former coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s name came to the fore as the national team’s next coach.

Hathurusingha, currently the Sri Lanka coach, also was not successful with Sri Lanka in this World Cup and there is speculation that he might be axed. But the Lanka coach recently said he is keen to continue as coach of the Sri Lanka side.

But his name is also linked with Bangladesh after BCB decided to part ways with Rhodes, who was successor of Hathurusingha in June last year, with a contract that was understood to last till the World T20 in 2020.

”If Chandika Hathurusingha is good for us then why not,” said BCB director and national team manager Khaled Mahmud Sujon, replying to query whether the former Bangladesh coach’s has any possibility to return here again.

”Board will take the decision. The coach who will be good for us a good coach. There are some reasons, nothing happens behind any reason,” said Mahmud.

”May be Chandika was compelled to go. I am not saying that Chandika will come. I am also not saying that the board is talking with Chandika. I am saying any of the names who is good for Bangladesh cricket. Chandika’s record is good. It’s not that Chandika will come. The result of the Sri Lanka is good, Sri Lanka may renew his contract,” he said.

”He can continue in Sri Lanka. We don’t know anything. It’s better if we don’t talk about any name. We need such coach who will be good for us and take Bangladesh cricket to the next level. We should bring a coach like that. I think, as this World Cup is over and next World cup is in four years, we should think long term,” he added.

”The coach should be given time to work on this. We shouldn’t be impatient. If we want quick performance then we have to wait. Think about Australia. 20-30 years ago Australia is an apprentice team. Today, Australia is strong team. If they become today’s champion it won’t be a surprise,” he said.
