Speaker urges MPs’ to help implement SDGs

DHAKA, July 8, 2019 (BSS) – Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today urged the members of parliament (MPs) to play a very conducive role in their respective constituencies to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“The MPs have many scopes to play key roles in achieving the SDGs,” the Speaker said while speaking at an orientation workshop for the MPs and JS officials at parliament secretariat complex here.

Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and Planning Commission jointly organized the orientation programme for MPs on “Parliamentary Engagement with Sustainable Development Goals: The Use of ICT to Accelerate Achievement” where a total of 75 MPs and 30 JS officials took part.

Stressing on using the information and communication technology (ICT) in this connection, Dr Chaudhury also asked the lawmakers to ensure proper use of ICT to accelerate the SDGs programme.

The parliament will initiate, she said, to set up “SDG Affairs Cell” from where all MPs of women reserved seats will be provided all-out cooperation in this connection.

The Speaker lauded the pragmatic steps taken by the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said the country is proceeding towards the right tract with many visible achievements.

Referring to the Bangladesh’s success in attaining SDGs that got worldwide appreciation, she hoped that the country would continue to achieve various achievements in the days to come.

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, MP, conducted the question and answer session in the workshop.

Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh Sudipto Mukerjee, senior secretary of parliament secretariat Dr Zafor Ahmed Khan, UNDP Headquarters representative Charles Chauvel, center director of the e-government leadership centre Ashok Kumar took part in the discussion.

JS whips – Md Atiur Rahman Atik, Iqbalur Rahim, Mahbub Ara Begum Gini, Samshul Haque Chowdhury, Panchanan Biswas and Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapan were also present on the occasion.
