Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute launched

DHAKA, July 4, 2019 (BSS) – Opening up a new horizon in treating burn
patients across the globe, Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn And
Plastic Surgery began its formal functioning today.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malik formally inaugurated the
activities of the 17-storey specialised hospital in the capital.

After the inaugural function, the health minister visited different
departments of the hospital to oversee its healthcare services. Later, he
joined a discussion there.

Speaking at the discussion, Malik said since about six lakh people get
burnt every year in different fire incidents in the country, the specialised
hospital which began its journey today will give treatment to these burn
patients.

The five-bed burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) was
turned into 500-bed facility with the efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina, he said.

While inaugurating the burn unit, the health minister said, the prime
minister directed the authorities concerned to provide treatment to the burn
patients as quick as possible.

Health Services Division secretary Md Asadul Islam, Health Education and
Family Welfare Division secretary Shaikh Yusuf Harun and Sheikh Hasina Burn
Institute coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen were, among others, present.

Equipped with most modern facilities and technology, the world’s largest
burn and plastic surgery institute was named after Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina in recognition of her devotion to the development of burn and plastic
surgery healthcare system, project director of the institute Prof Dr Abul
Kalam Azad told BSS.

The 17-storey institute on 76 acres of land located at Chankharpool in the
capital, next to the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover, will provide advanced
treatment to burn patients, while physicians and nurses will get training to
enhance their professional excellence.

Constructed at a cost of Taka 912 crore, Sheikh Hasina National Institute
of Burn And Plastic Surgery consists of three blocks — burn unit, plastic
surgery unit and academic wing.

The institute has 500 beds, 22 intensive care units (ICU), 22 high
dependency units (HDU) along with physiotherapy and psycho-socio counseling,
12 operation theatres and one post-operative ward.

The hospital has a helipad on its rooftop for use of the emergency
patients and also a car-parking with a capacity of 180 vehicles.

The burn unit of DMCH started its operation with only five beds by
country’s first plastic surgeon Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidullah in 1986.

Later, it was transformed into an institute on Dr Md Shahidullah Sarak in
Chankharpool area here, raising its capacity to 50 beds under the supervision
of Prof Dr Samanta Lal in 2003.

On April 6, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the
construction work of the burn institute by laying foundation stone.

The Bangladesh Army’s engineering core started its construction work on
April 27 in the same year.
