We were not desperate enough to win game: Shakib

DHAKA, July 4, 2019 (BSS) – Despite doing all the things that a player
can do, Shakib Al Hasan couldn’t ensure Bangladesh’s semifinal in the World
Cup, a thing for which they have undertaken a preparation for the last four
years.

Shakib scored 542 runs and took 11 wickets to single-handedly drive the
side in the cricket’s biggest extravaganza but lacked adequate support from
the other end, which was main key in Bangladesh downfall.

Bangladesh played eight games, winning three, losing four while one game
was washed out. The latest defeat came at the hands of India, which
effectively ruled out their semifinal hope.

According to Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh lacked desperation, which he
termed as the missing link despite putting all effort in the ground.

Bangladesh started the tournament on a perfect note by beating South
Africa but followed it by losing to New Zealand and England while had to
share points in their next game against Sri Lanka.

The Tigers can curse them for losing the match against New Zealand as
they were able to put them in pressure but ran out of gas when it was
required the most in the middle and it seemed the men in green and red had to
pay dearly for losing those two points.

From the start of the tournament Bangladesh managed to earn a name for
them for playing good brand of cricket but according to Shakib that was not
good enough.

“It is right that we played good [brand] of cricket but we didn’t came
here to play good cricket. We wanted to win but we couldn’t do it,” Shakib
said.

”I think it’s very disappointing because we couldn’t fulfill our dream
that we had for this mega event. From that prospective I think it’s very
disappointing. If we could have done few small things better, I think we
would have got a better result,” he said.

”Look, those of us who are playing, we all know our responsibility that
we have to play well. It sometimes happen and sometimes doesn’t, that’s the
thing but I personally think, if our applications were better in some areas,
we could go in a better position and it is true for every department,
batting, bowling and fielding,” he pointed out.

”If I talk about the whole summary of the World Cup result wise it’s
very disappointing. But there are some positive sides too but talking about
this doesn’t make any sense now. Because, at the end of the day, result
matters and this is an area that we have to change,” he remarked.

”One thing I can say that everyone is trying, every one of us tried but
I think we should try more desperately,” he concluded.
