Govt in hard line over Barguna killing: Hasan

DHAKA, June 27, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the government is in the hard line to punish those involved in the brutal killing of a youth in Barguna.

“One person has already been arrested over the incident. Police are trying to arrest others involved in the brutal killing of the youth in broad daylight,” he told newsmen after attending a meeting at International Mother Language Institute here.

Dr Hasan, also the publication and publicity secretary of Awami League, presided over the meeting of Media, Publicity and Documentation Sub-Committee of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary celebration national implementation committee.

Expressing his deep condemnation, the minister said it is very shocking that nobody came forward to protect the youth (Rifat Sharif) when he was attacked.

He praised the youth’s wife who tried frantically to save him (Rifat).

Criminals attacked Rifat, 25, with sharp weapons in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College yesterday (Thursday) and his wife was desperately trying to save him.

Immediately after the attack, locals had taken Rifat to Barishal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (BSMCH). Later, the doctors declared him death.

Replying a comment of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Hasan said the people of the country are living peacefully under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and they (people) are happy with the government. The world community is praising the development of Bangladesh, he added.

The AL leader said BNP leaders are habituated to make blind criticisms of the government. So, they are talking such bizarre and fabricated things, he added.

Dr Hasan said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government is working relentlessly for the welfare of the country’s common people. The poverty rate has come down to 20 percent from 41 percent in 10 years, he added.

About the meeting, the minister said Bangabandhu’s birth centenary will also be celebrated in different countries of the world. Besides, the committee is taking preparations to celebrate the birth centenary on digital platform.

Bangabandhu Birth Centenary National Implementation Committee chairman Professor Dr Rafiqul Islam, state minister of Information Ministry Dr Murad Hasan, state minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, chief coordinator of the national implementation committee Dr Kamal Abdul Naser, information secretary Abdul Malek, Bangladesh Television director general SM Huron-or-Rashid, Bangladesh Press Institute Director General Jafar Wazed and prime minister’s deputy press secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan, among others, were present in the meeting.
