Mango traders happy after a couple of years in C’nawabganj

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, June 26, 2019 (BSS) – Everybody related to mango business of the district are passing their smiling days with high yield and price of the delicious fruits as they are doing a very good business after a couple of years.

It was estimated that about 2,25,000 metric tones of mango was produced this year in the district and a transaction of Taka 550 to 600 crore is expected in the district this year, said Md. Abdul Wahed, president of the Bangladesh Mango Producer Merchants Association.

All mango orchards in Chapainawabganj district had a good bloom that predicted a good production this year. Farmers and officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said, the temperature and overall weather was favourable for flowering and good yielding this year.

According to the DAE more than 83 percent mango trees had borne flowers. Mango, the most delicious summer fruit and the main cash crop of Chapainawabganj offers a huge business to different sets of people at different phases.

The original owners sell their orchards for one to five years to the businessmen who take much care of the orchards so that they can have good flowers and sell them to other sets of businessmen at a higher price. In this way the business continues till marketing.

Nor’westers, draught, cloudy weather, hailstorm are the main enemies of mangoes but these were not all acute this year, said Dr. Saifur Rahman,deputy director of Kallyanpur Horticuture Centre of Chapainawabganj.

Imtiazur Rahman Rimon, a wholesale mango dealer said, the prices of mangoes at present are more or less double than that of the last few years.

He added that now Khirsha is sold at Tk. 5,200 to 5,500 per mound, Langra at Tk. 2,700 to 3,000, Amrapali at Tk. 2,600 to 3,200, Bombai at Tk. 2,000 to 2,200 and Boglaguti at Tk. 2,400 to 2,800.

Meanwhile Fazli has started coming to the market and is sold at 1,400 to 1,700. But the price of this variety of mango is likely to go higher within a very short time, he said.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, in the district, there are 24,74,710 mango trees on 31,820 hectares of land. Some 250 mango varieties are grown in the district. Of them, 40 percent Fazli, 30 percent Ashina, 20 percent Gopalbhog, Langra, Khirshapat and other good varieties. The rest are lower varieties of guti mangoes, the sources said.
