DSS disburses Tk 63.30 cr among 9.01 lakh beneficiaries in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, June 25, 2019 (BSS)- Department of Social Services (DSS) has
disbursed allowances worth around Taka 63.30 crore among more than 9.01 lakh
beneficiaries under various social safety net programmes in all eight
districts under Rajshahi division during the current 2018-19 fiscal year.

The allowances were distributed among — 18,469 freedom fighters, 5,30,232 old
age people, 2,15,57 widow and other women repressed by husband, 1,33,503
distressed people with disabilities, 556 transgender and 3,139 dalit, horizon
and bede population — for their rehabilitation.

The existing social safety net programmes, being implemented by the DSS,
are playing vital role towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs).

DSS Divisional Director Dr Razzaqul Islam revealed this information while
presenting his concept paper at a seminar titled “Role of DSS to achieve
SDGs” hosted by his office at Cookey Jar Restaurant in the city today.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman, who addressed the seminar
as chief guest, said responsive and effective role of all quarters both
public and private sectors, including the individuals are very important
towards supplementing the government’s efforts to achieve SDGs by 2030.

Many more social actors should come forward and work together to infuse
dynamism in all the nation-building process and activities to make those
sustainable, for the greater interest of achieving SDGs.

Rahman told the meeting that many of the SDGs were set with the proposals
of Bangladesh which were also reflected in the ten special initiatives of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Actually the Prime Minister’s Special 10
Initiatives and SDGs are tied in a single string, he said, adding that the
country witnessed remarkable development through implementation of these
initiatives.

He urged the officials concerned to be more liberal in delivering
information to people and media to ensure accountability and transparency of
public offices. He also laid importance on execution of national integrity
strategy to stamp out corruption from the society.

Chaired by Dr Razzaqul Islam, the seminar was addressed, among others, by
Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Hemayetul Islam, Editor
of Daily Sonali Sangbad Liakat Ali and Editor of Daiy Sonar Desh Akbaraul
Hassan Millat.
