HC wants to know steps taken over death in Mediterranean

DHAKA, June 24, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today asked authorities
concerned to inform court in a week about steps taken against the people and
companies involved in human trafficking which led to the deaths of 37
Bangladeshis in the Mediterranean recently.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and
Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order as it kept the matter stand over for
a week.

The court came up with the order after holding hearing on a writ filed
by lawyer Mohammad Emdadul Haque Sumon. The petitioner in his writ pleaded
for court’s direction in giving Taka one crore to each families of the
victims and steps against the accused.

“The court wanted to know about the steps taken against the people
involved in human trafficking. It wanted to know whether the people and
companies from Sylhet and Noakhali, who are blamed for sending innocents
through sea, have proper licenses and what legal actions have been taken
against them,” deputy attorney general ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud said.
