Rupayan chairman gets bail in FR Tower case

DHAKA, June 23, 2019 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today granted bail to Rupayan Group Chairman Liyakat Ali Khan Mukul in the case filed over inferno that killed 27 people and injured 70 others at Banani FR Tower on March 28.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order as Mukul surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail. The prosecution, however, opposed his plea.

After hearing both the sides, the court granted Mukul bail on Taka 20 thousand bonds.

Earlier on April 11, Tasvir Ul Islam, one of the owners of FR Tower, was granted bail in the case, while SMHI Faruque, owner of the land where the skyscraper is standing, was given bail on May 6.

Earlier on March 31, the court placed Tasvir Ul Islam and SMHI Faruque on seven-day remand.

Tasvir, also a leader of BNP, and Faruque have been blamed for collusion in causing loss of lives and properties with evil intention, causing loss of lives, severe injuries and damage to properties in fire caused by severe negligence, in the case.

Banani Police Box in-charge sub-inspector Milton Dutta filed the case with Banani Police Station on March 30 against Tasvir and Faruque and Rupayan Group chairman Liyakat Ali Khan Mukul.

The case later transferred to DB for investigation. Tasvir and Faruque too were arrested on the night of March 30 from different areas of the capital.
