Indonesian coal to be imported for Payra Power plant

DHAKA, June 18, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd (BCPCL) has signed a deal with Indonesian firm to import coal for 1320 MW Coal-fired Payra Power Plant in Patuakhali.

The BCPCL inked the deal of coal supply agreement for operation of Payra 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant (1st Phase) with PT Bayan Resources Tbk, Indonesia.

Secretary of North-West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL) Dipak Kumar Dhali and Chairman of PT Bayan Resources Tbk Purnomo Yusgiantoro signed the contract yesterday on behalf of their respective sides.

Prime Minister’s Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, witnessed the contract signing ceremony as the chief guest and said all people will get electricity by the next year.

“The government is resolving its power crisis through utilising the most modern technology and Payra plant will be built with the most modern technology,” he said.

Dr Chowdhury said this power plant will use the best coal so that environmental concerns are addressed in a better way, adding, “Ultra-supercritical technology is being used in the Payra power plant and it will have no impact on the environment.”

He urged journalists to help the government to reach accurate information about the technology being used in the coal-fired power plant.

According to the contract, Indonesian firm PT Bayan Resources Tbk will supply the required coal for the Unit-1 of the power plant so that it could start power generation from December next.

It said the plant will be operated by imported sub-bituminous coal. Its calorific value is 4700-5500 Kcal. This type of coal is chiefly abundant in Indonesia and Australia. At the initial stage coal will be imported from Indonesia.

About four million ton coal will be required to run the plant per annum. For transportation of coal Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & KG, Germany has been assigned.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Ltd and Chinese China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC) have jointly formed the BCPCL to set up the power plant.

Programme was also addressed by Indonesian Ambassador Rina Prihtyasmiarsi Soemarno, chief coordinator on the SDG Affairs to the Prime Minister’s Office Abul Kalam Azad and Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus.
