Eid journey of people will be comfortable: Quader

DHAKA, May 31, 2019 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul
Quader today said the journey of homebound people will be comfortable ahead
of Eid-ul-Fitr as there is no possibility of traffic jam on highways.

“There is no concern of having traffic congestion on roads and highways
ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr this year…If discipline is brought in transportation,
I think there will be no traffic jam on the roads across the country,
including the capital,” he said.

Quader, also Awami League general secretary, came up with the remarks while
speaking at a press briefing after his visit to Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the
city.

During his visit to the bus terminal, he observed the activities of the
vigilance team and mobile court of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA)
to see whether holidaymakers are facing any trouble during their Eid journey.

He said people may face problems on the Airport-Gazipur road during their
journey ahead of Eid as road repair work continues there. “I requested the
Gazipur city mayor to deploy 300 volunteers on the road to ease traffic
movement,” he added.

The road transport and bridges minister said the government has taken all
necessary measures so that people can go to their homes safely to celebrate
Eid with their dears and nears.

About the allegations of toll collection from highway buses, he said the
government has strengthened monitoring and instructed the law enforcing
agencies to take steps to check extortion on highways.

“Stern action will be taken if someone is found involved in extortion on
highways,” he added.

Quader said if bus owners charge extra fare from passengers during the Eid-
ul-Fitr, action will be taken against them. Charging additional fares from
passengers would not be tolerated, he added.

“Noting that drivers could not use mobile phone while driving vehicles,” he
said, adding that vigilance must be strengthened to check mobile phone use
during their trips.

BRTA Chairman Mohammed Moshiar Rahman, Dhaka Zila Transport Workers Union
president Abbas Uddin, BRTA vigilance team official Anisur Rahman and
officials of the Roads and Highways Department were present.
