International Day of UN Peacekeepers tomorrow

DHAKA, May 28, 2019 (BSS) – The International Day of United Nations
Peacekeepers will be observed in the country like other countries tomorrow in
a befitting manner.

The International Day for UN Peacekeepers is being observed on May 29
every year across the world aiming to underscore the importance of
maintaining global peace, pay tribute to those involved in the peacekeeping
missions and honour the UN peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives in
establishing global peace.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate
messages on the occasion of the day.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh is one of the largest
troops contributing nations in UN Peacekeeping missions.

Utmost sincerity along with professionalism of the Bangladeshi
peacekeepers hav been playing a vital role in achieving the glory, he said,
adding “I hope Bangladeshi Peacekeepers, performing their duties with
honesty, devotion and professionalism…they will be able to continue this
trend in establishing world peace, harmony and amity in the days to come”.

In pursuing the country’s diplomatic objectives, the President said, the
government has been consistent in upholding the principle of ‘Friendship to
all, malice towards none’ as enunciated by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He said Bangladesh has now been emerged as a country of peace and communal
harmony around the world.

“The peacekeepers of Bangladesh have been able to attain credibility by
dint of their highest standard of professionalism, devotion and bravery since
their first engagement to the UN Peacekeeping operations in 1988. The
outstanding contribution of our peacekeepers has upheld the image of
Bangladesh at international arena,” Abdul Hamid said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the Bangladeshi
peacekeepers have been working relentlessly to establish peace and harmony in
various conflict zones in the world.

They are highly praised worldwide for their high standard of
professionalism, devoted service, hard work, dedication and courage for the
establishment of world peace and harmony, she said.

On behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh, the premier
assured of her full support to the United Nations Peacekeeping operations for
establishing and safeguarding world peace. “I hope Bangladeshi peacekeepers
will contribute more in the future with their highest standard of
professionalism, efficiency and sincerity,” she added.

The President and the Prime Minister wished the ‘International Day of
United Nations Peacekeepers-2019’ a grand success.

Different programmes have been taken to observe the day, said an ISPR
release issued here today.

In observance of the day, a commemoration ceremony at Bangabandhu
International Conference Centre (BICC) here in honour of the relatives of the
deceased and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers, will be held, for paying due
respect to the deceased and injured peacekeepers.

Principal Staff Officer Lieutenant General Md Mahfuzur Rahman will
inaugurate the ceremony while President Abdul Hamid is expected to attend the
function as the chief guest.

Marking the day, different national dailies will publish special
supplements and articles tomorrow highlighting the importance of the day.

Besides, different television channels, including Bangladesh Television and
Bangladesh Betar, will air special programmes, including documentaries and
talk-shows, on different activities of Bangladesh in the UN peacekeeping
missions.
