Draft speedy trial act gets cabinet nod

DHAKA, May 27, 2019 (BSS) – The cabinet today approved in principle the draft of “The Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) (Amendment) Act-2019” increasing the tenure of its effectiveness for five more years in its weekly meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at PMO office here.

“The cabinet has approved this in principal as the tenure of the act expired in April this year,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said at a press briefing at the Secretariat here.

After the amendment, the act will be effective till 2024, he said.

About the reason for extending tenure of the act, he said, “There are many sensitive cases which require quick disposal.”

The cabinet also approved in principal the draft of “The Customs Act, 2019”, he said adding that the act got final approval in 2018, but it could not be passed at that time as the tenure of the parliament ended and the law was cancelled for that reason.

Draft of the act was approved by the cabinet just for formalities as no change was made in the 2018’s finally approved law, he continued.

The cabinet adopted two separate condolence motions at the deaths of two Ekushey Padak winning singers Subir Nandi and Khalid Hussain.

It also congratulated the Under-19 women football team of Bangladesh for jointly clinching the title of Bagamata International Gold Cup Football Tournament and the Bangladesh National Cricket Team for becoming champion in the tri-nation series in Ireland.

An honorary medal which was given to the Science and Technology Minister for his contribution in e-development of Nuclear Industry by the Roastom State Atomic Energy of Russian Federation was handed over to the premier.

The special ‘sammanona’ given to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as the best project in the field of development of human resources was also handed over the prime minister.
