Indigenous fishes release small amount of eggs in Halda

CHATTOGRAM, May 25, 2019 (BSS)- Some very popular species of fish which
are locally known as Rui, Katla, Mrigel and Kaliboush released very small
amount of eggs in the river Halda, the lone natural fish breeding sanctuary,
early Saturday

This according to experts is the first such event this year as these
fishes usually release eggs during March-June period of the monsoon.

After a long wait a very small quantity of eggs were released
in the river but fisheries experts and experienced fry-collectors observed
that mother fishes released small amount of eggs, which was an insignificant
amount.

Fisherman Narayan Das told BSS that some fry collectors collected small
quantity of eggs early Saturday as mother fishes released small amount of
eggs.

He confirmed that nearly 200 fishermen out of 2200 fishermen collected
the small amounts of eggs on the second day of the season.

“Manmade disaster like indiscriminate hunting of mother fishes (egg
carrying fishes), river pollution and unfavorable weather condition are the
major causes of little release of spawn by the major carps this year” said
Prof Monjurul Kibria of Zoology Department at Chattogram University, who has
been carrying out massive research works on unique character of this river
and its fish spawning.

Ruhul Amin, upazila Nirbahii officer of Hathazari upazila also confirmed
that fry collectors collected very small quantity of eggs early Saturday.

He said that the administration will take measures to protect mother
fishes as it can release eggs in the river Halda freely side by side
cooperation to the fisherman to dig pond for protecting egg.
