Maintain discipline on roads: Quader

DHAKA, May 23, 2019 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today urged the transport owners and workers to maintain discipline on the roads while carrying holidaymakers on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“Transport owners can play a vital role in making the road safe. They should pay attention so that the people cannot fall victims of sufferings,” he said at a briefing after a meeting with stakeholders on road safety at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s (BRTA) new building in the city’s Banani area.

Quader, also Awami League General Secretary, directed the authorities concerned to remain watchful to make the journey of holidaymakers smooth.

Unfit vehicles should not ply the roads during the Eid-ul-Fitr, he said.

Informing that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Konabari and Elenga flyovers on May 25 through a video conferencing, the minister said the Eid journey of the people of the north region will be safe this year as two flyovers and four underpasses have been opened.

Quader thanked the officials of Japanese companies for completing the construction work of Meghna and Gomti bridges six months earlier of the stipulated time saving Taka 720 crore.

BRTA Chairman Matiar Rahman, Nirapad Sarak Chai Andolon Chairman Ilias Kanchan, officials of Highway Police and Dhaka Metropolitan Police, representatives of transport owners and workers and civil society members joined the meeting.
