DHAKA, May 12, 2019 (BSS) – Economic Relations Division (ERD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations today signed two agreements to implement two projects for strengthening technical capacity in agriculture sector.
The two projects are “Strengthening of Market Linkages and Technical Capacity for Agricultural Groups to Promote Income Generation in Cox’s Bazar’ (SAFE+ project)” and “Emergency response to enhance technical capacity for monitoring and management of Fall Armyworm in Bangladesh (TCP emergency project)”.
Additional Secretary of the ERD (UN Wing) Sultana Afroz and FAO Representative in Bangladesh Robert D Simpson signed the agreements on behalf of their respective sides, said a press release.
The ‘Strengthening of Market Linkages and Technical Capacity for Agricultural Groups to Promote Income Generation in Cox’s Bazar’ (SAFE+ project) will be implemented within three years with a cost of US$53.78 lakh.
The project will play a key role in FAO’s 5-year Resilience Strategy and support plan for Cox’s Bazar district developed in partnership with the Government of Bangladesh agencies and will contribute to the implementation of the Master Plan for Agricultural Development in the Southern Region, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Implementation of this project will contribute to increase production of high value vegetables crops in the Teknaf, Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Ramu upazillas of the Cox’s Bazar district.
Funded by FAO’s own resources, the Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) will be completed within one year with a cost of $3.50.
The objective of the project is to contribute to the protection of livelihoods and food security of the agricultural farmers, agri-entrepreneurs and contract growers, who are living in FAW affected areas and developing capacities of main stakeholders in awareness, surveillance, monitoring and integrated management of the Fall Armyworm (FAW).
