HC orders removal of 52 substandard food products from market

DHAKA, May 12, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today ordered authorities
concerned to remove 52 food products, proven to be substandard in the test
conducted by Bangladesh Standard Testing Institution (BSTI), from markets
across the country.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and
Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after holding hearing on a writ
petition filed in this regard.

Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan filed the writ on behalf of Conscious Consumer
Society (CCS) on May 9 as its legal notice sent on May 6 to the concerned
authorities went unheard.

The court in its order today asked BSTI, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority
(BFSA) and Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to conduct
joint raids against regarding this and destroy the products after seizing
those from the markets. The three organisations have also been asked to
submit reports on progress within 10 days.

Earlier in the day, BSTI Director Engineer SM Ishak Ali and BFSA Director
Dr Sahdeb Chandra Saha appeared before the court to explain their positions
regarding the substandard products.

During the hearing, the court urged prime minister to declare war against
food adulteration and to declare ‘state of emergency’ if necessary.
