RAJSHAHI, May 11, 2019 (BSS) – World Migratory Bird Day has been observed here today with a call taking immediate measures to protect the migratory birds and their habitats from plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is a serious and growing threat to migratory birds, which is limiting the ability of the migratory birds to deal with the much larger threat faced by climate change.

This year the day is being observed across the world with theme- “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!”

On the occasion voluntary organizations Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF), Save the Nature, Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) and Better Nature and Society jointly organized the programme at Saheb Bazar Zero Point.

They called for spotlighting the impact of plastic pollution on migratory birds and their habitats.

They also called for protecting the nature and natural resources through adopting time-befitting and effective measures for conservation of biodiversity.

Chairman of Save the Nature and Life Mijanur Rahman, General Secretary of BLS Dr Hemayetul Islam, Regional Coordinator of Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge Shahidul Islam and Vice-president of Women Chamber of Commerce and Industries Dr Selina Begum, among others, addressed the meeting.

Speakers called for creating gardens with adequate protection and security for migratory birds for their living and breeding without fear.
