Canada sees biggest monthly employment growth since 1976
OTTAWA, May 11, 2019 (BSS/Xinhua) – Canada saw an increase of 107,000 jobs
in April, its biggest one-month employment surge since 1976, according to
Statistics Canada Friday.
The unexpected increase helped lower the jobless rate to 5.7 percent in
April from 5.8 percent in March.
The increased employment in April was driven by 84,000 new jobs in the
private sector and a gain of 23,000 jobs in public sector. There was no
change in the number of self-employed.
On a year-over-year basis, employment grew 426,000, or 2.3 percent, with
gains in both full-time jobs of 248,000 and part-time jobs of 179,000.
Employment rose for youth aged 15 to 24, people aged 55 and older, and
women in the core working ages of 25 to 54.
Employment gains were spread across several industries: wholesale and
retail trade, construction, information, culture and recreation and
agriculture.
However, employment decreased in professional, scientific and technical
services last month.
