Brazil registers inflation rate of 0.57 pct in April

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 11, 2019 (BSS/Xinhua) – Brazil’s inflation rate hit
0.57 percent in April, the highest level for that month since 2016 when it
reached 0.61 percent, but still lower than the 0.75 percent recorded in March
this year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said
Friday.

Between January and April, inflation was 2.09 percent, reported IBGE. In
the 12-month period ending in April, the inflation rate hit 4.94 percent.

April’s inflation was driven by the rise in prices of food and beverages,
which increased 0.63 percent.

Transportation costs increased 0.94 percent, while health and personal care
products went up 1.51 percent, according to the report.

For the current year, the government has set an inflation target of 4.25
percent with a margin of 1.5 point.

In 2018, Brazil saw an inflation rate of 3.75 percent, which was within the
official goal.
