HC forms judicial committee to probe lawyer Palash’s death

DHAKA, May 08, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today formed a judicial
inquiry committee to probe death of a lawyer in jail custody.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and
Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order, asking the committee to submit its
report within 30 days.

“The court formed the five-member committee led by chief judicial
magistrate of Panchagarh. Another judicial magistrate will assist the
committee, which will also have Panchagarh deputy commissioner,
superintendant of police and jail superintendant as members,” Barrister Syed
Sayedul Haque Suman, who filed a writ in this regard, told BSS.

The court also issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain in
four weeks as to why their ‘failure’ in providing security to an inmate shall
not be declared illegal. The court set June 23 for passing further order in
this regard.

Barrister Suman filed the writ and moved it himself, while deputy
attorney general Md Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the state.

“Advocate Palash was a member of Dhaka Bar Association and was confined
at Panchagarh Jail after getting arrested in a defamation case. He got
seriously injured in a fire on April 26 and later succumbed to his injuries,”
Barrister Suman added.

The lawyer filed the writ on May 6, making concerned officials including
home secretary, inspector general of prisons, Rangpur DIG and Panchagarh jail
superintendent as respondents.
