‘Social afforestation making rural women self-reliant’

RANGPUR, May 06, 2019 (BSS) – The social afforestation activities under
the Rural Road Maintenance and Tree Plantation Programme are making many
rural women self-reliant along with improving environment across the country.

Member of the Parliament from Rangpur-2 constituency Abul Kalam Md.
Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Deuk said this at a function held at Badarganj
Upazila Engineer’s Office in Badarganj upazila town on Sunday afternoon as
the chief guest.

He distributed cheques of Taka 66,000 among each of the 16 female
beneficiaries of the programme as their savings and Taka 75,000 among a
supervisor in the event organised by the Local Government and Engineering
Department (LGED).

With Badarganj Upazila Engineer of LGED Mashiur Rahman in the chair,
Upazila Vice-Chairman Tazul Islam and General Secretary of Badarganj upazila
Awami League Tutul Chowdhury addressed the function as special guests.

Terming the Rural Road Maintenance and Tree Plantation Programme as one of
the most successful projects of LGED, the speakers said road maintenance,
plantation of tree saplings and taking care of those by rural women are
making them solvent.

The chief guest stressed on planting more saplings of wood, medicinal and
fruit trees by the roadsides, office premises, embankments, premises of
educational and religious institutions and other places to further enhance
forestation.

“We have achieved tremendous success in cutting poverty under the
programme and children of its female beneficiaries are going to schools,
wearing better clothes, using sanitary latrines and living a better life,” he
mentioned.

He suggested female beneficiaries of the Rural Road Maintenance and Tree
Plantation Programme to take proper care of rural roads and planted tree
saplings to change their fortune side by side with improving the environment.
