CHATTOGRAM, May 5, 2019 (BSS) – Some very popular species of indigenous fishes which are locally known as Rui, Katla, Mrigel and Kaliboush released very small amount of eggs in the river Halda, the lone natural fish breeding sanctuary, early Sunday.

After a long wait, mother fishes released a very small quantity of eggs in the river, making fish collectors disappointed. This is the first egg release of this year as these fishes usually release eggs during March-June period.

Narayan Das, a fish collector, told BSS that some fry collectors collected small quantity of eggs early Sunday

as mother fishes released small amount of eggs.

He confirmed that nearly 200 fishermen out of 2,200 fishermen collected the same amounts of eggs on the first day of the season.

“Manmade disaster like indiscriminate hunting of mother fishes (egg
carrying fishes), river pollution and unfavorable weather condition are the
major causes of little release of spawn by the major carps this year” said
Prof Monjurul Kibria of Zoology Department at Chattogram University, who has
been carrying out massive research works on unique character of this river
and its fish spawning.

Ruhul Amin, upazila Nirbahii officer of Hathazari, also confirmed that fry
collectors collected small quantity of eggs.

He said the administration would take measures to protect mother fishes so
that it can release eggs in the river Halda freely.
