Govt to provide all support to cyclone affected people: Amu

DHAKA, May 05 ,2019 (BSS) – Awami League Advisory council member and former minister Amir Hossen Amu today said the government has taken all necessary steps to provide support to and distribute relief goods among the cyclone affected people across the country.

“The government and the ruling Awami League have taken all out measures for providing all kinds of cooperation to and relief among the cyclone hit people across the country,” the senior ruling party leader said this at a press conference.

The press conference was preceded by a meeting on the damages caused by the cyclonic storm Fani at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office in city’s Dhanmondi here.

Referring to the devastation caused by the cyclone in 1991, the former minister said the 1991 cyclone had caused deaths to five lakh people and colossal damage to huge resources. The country had no preparation to face the severity of the cyclone in that time, he added.

As per the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Amu said all party workers and lawmakers stood beside the cyclone-affected people.

“We have taken all out preparations as per the need of the cyclone affected people,” he said, adding even Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is fully aware about the latest situation of the cyclone affected people.

Awami League Presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury, Joint General Secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and Executive body member SM Kamal Hossen, among others ,attended the press conference.

Replying to a query, Amu said two committees have been formed centrally by the Awami League to oversee the relief distribution programme and visit the cyclone hit areas.

A party delegation led by Awami League acting General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif will visit the cyclone affected Subarnachar under Noakhali district. The delegation will include Awami League Joint General Secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanank and Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi.

Another party delegation led by Amir Hossen Amu will visit cyclone affected Barguna district. The other members of the delegation are party’s Organising Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Information and Research Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossen.
