BEA accords reception to Qazi Kholiquzzaman

DHAKA, May 04, 2019 (BSS) – Speaker at a function today said that renowned economist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad has been working tirelessly to ensure human development, establishment of peoples’ dignity, poverty alleviation and bringing the womenfolk into the forefront of the society.

They also noted that Dr Kholiquzzaman is such an economist who had not only done researches on economy, rather utilized research outcomes for public welfare through which he has become a strong preacher of public-welfare oriented economy, and a tireless traveler towards making economy more human.

The speakers said this while according a reception to Independence Award winning economist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad at the Engineers Institution Auditorium in the city.

Chaired by BEA President Dr Abul Barkat, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Fazle Kabir spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Dr Kholiquzzaman and his wife Dr Zaheda Ahmad and BEA general secretary Dr Jamal Uddin Ahmed also spoke.

Terming Kholiquzzaman as a kind of different economist, Fazle Kabir said the economists usually conduct researches, but Dr Kholiquzzaman apart from doing researches, also utilized his research outcomes for human development, poverty alleviation and public welfare.

“He (Kholiquzzaman) also continued his relentless efforts to bring the womenfolk into the forefront of the society and ensuring just rights of all,” he added.

Dr Abul Barkat said Dr Kholiquzzaman is not a traditional mainstream economist, rather a humanitarian and development economist. “He (Kholiquzzaman) has given a dynamic leadership to those researches where multidimensional aspects act on poverty and disparity,” he added.

He said that as being the chairman of Bangladesh Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation (PKSF), Kholiquzzaman has given the leadership to transform PKSF into a people-oriented humanitarian organization from its usual working procedure.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kholiquzzaman said, “The base of my philosophy is people. As human beings, we’ll have to give due dignity to others, eliminate disparity which is also the main philosophy of our constitution.”

He also noted that if inclusiveness is ensured in the development process as well as there are human rights, human dignity, parity and equality, it would be possible to build a happy and prosperous society. “If all of these are ensured, it will be possible to attain the SDGs and I urge all to work in this regard,” he added.

Dr Kholiquzzaman also vowed to spend the rest of his life to public services.

During the function, Bangladesh Bank Governer Fazle Kabir put a shawl over the shoulder of Kholiquzzaman while Dr Abul Barkat handed over him a crest.

BEA Vice President AZM Saleh moderated the function.
