Bumper vegetable production expected in south-western region
NARAIL, May 4, 2019 (BSS)- Farmers and officials of the Department of
Agricultural Extension (DAE) are expecting a bumper production of summer
vegetables in south-western region under Khulna division in the current
season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said farmers of the four
south-western districts cultivated summer vegetables on a total of 19,640
hectares of land this year with the production target of 2,04,420 metric
tonnes.
The four south-western districts are Narail, Satkhira, Khulna and
Bagerhat, the DAE added.
Local DAE office in Khulna said 1,650 hectares of land has been brought
under cultivation in Narail district with production target of 25,575 tonnes,
7,080 hectares of land in Satkhira district with production target of
1,09,740 tonnes, 5,310 hectares of land in Khulna district with production
target of 82,305 tonnes and 5,600 hectares of land in Bagerhat district with
production target 86,800 metric tonnes of summer vegetables.
The DAE and Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation distributed
agri-inputs including seeds to the farmers alongside providing necessary
technical assistance.
An official of DAE said farmers are expecting a bumper production of
vegetables this year as they are getting at least 14 metric tonnes of summer
vegetables from per hectare of land, thanks to proper monitoring by the
authorities.
Additional Director of Khulna regional DAE Kazi Abdul Mannan said
necessary steps have been taken to ensure supply of adequate quantity of
improved quality seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agricultural
inputs among the growers in fair prices to boost summer vegetables
production.
