May Day observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, May 02, 2019 (BSS) – The historic May Day was observed in the
district yesterday with a fresh vow to establish the fundamental rights of
the working class people.

The theme of day this year was “Build Workers-Owners Unity, Take Oath for
Development”.

Marking the day, the district administration, Government Labour Welfare
Centre (GLWC), political parties and different Sramik organizations chalked
out the elaborate programmes.

The programmes included hoisting of national, organizational and red flags
atop the offices of trade unions and labor organizations, wearing of badges,
staging of dramas and cultural function.

In the morning, a colorful rally led by deputy commissioner (DC) Abdul
Matin and superintendent of police (SP) Abdul Mannan Miah was brought out
from in front of Independence Square and ended in front of Zila Shilpakala
Academy (ZSA) after parading the main roads of the town.

Later, a discussion meeting organized by district administration and GLWC
was held at the auditorium of ZSA of the town with deputy secretary and
additional deputy commissioner (General) Rokhsana Begum in the chair.

DC Abdul Matin addressed the meeting as the chief guest and SP Abdul Mannan
Miah, and civil surgeon Dr. ABM Abu Hanif and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality
Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon were present at the event as the
special guests.

The speakers said the day is observed across the world every year since
1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the workers at Hay Market,
Chicago, in the USA for eight-hour working day and upholding the rights of
the working class.

DC Abdul Matin in his speech said the spirit of the May Day would further
strengthen the efforts of welfare of the workers to help get their just
rights to achieve the sustainable development goal of the government.

Terming the government as worker-friendly, the DC said the government led
by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been playing an effective role to ensure
minimum wages for workers and healthy working environment and their rights.

The DC also urged the worker leaders to be tolerant to realize their
logical demands from the owners through showing mutual interest, harmony and
respect to make a happy, prosperous and hunger- free sonar Bangla.

SP Abdul Mannan Miah in his speeches said the government has been
implementing different programmes to develop the living standard of workers
for long after assume in power in 2009, the SP also said.

Officials of the district administration, the staff of GLWC and labors and
their leaders including journalists of print and electronic media
participated in the programmes.
