DHAKA, April 30, 2019 (BSS) – For the first time, the authorities have introduced automated toll system for motor vehicles crossing the Meghna Bridge and the Gumti Bridge on Dhaka-Chattagram Highway.

“The government has installed automatic toll machines on the Meghna and Gumti bridges, which would help transports move fast without stopping there,” Secretary of Road Transport and Highways Nazrul Islam said after inaugurating Windshield Based First Track Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at Meghna Bridge toll plaza today.

He said the new system will work initially on one lane of Meghna and Gumti Bridge Toll Plaza and the number of lanes would be increased on the basis of its popularity.

The secretary urged all owners and workers of motor vehicles to support this new ETC system for increasing popularity.

He said the newly constructed Meghna and Gumti bridges would be opened for the public before the Eid-ul-Fitr.

According to the system manual, the automated toll system will work through setting up radio frequency identification (RFID) on the front glass of the motor vehicles (windshield), which would help collect toll through automatic toll machines from the user’s bank account without additional time for manual toll system.

Soon after collecting toll from the users of the bridge, a short message will be sent to the users to this end within 10 seconds, the manual said.

Among others, Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways Department Ibne Alam Hasan, Highway Police Superintendent Shafiqul Islam, Bangladesh Truck Covered Van Owners Association leader Hossain Ahmed Majumder, Executive Director of Toll Management Firm of CNS Major (Retd) Ziaul Hasan Sarwar spoke on the occasion.
