CHATTOGRAM, April 29, 2019 (BSS) – Three furnace oil-laden wagons derailed into a canal in Egromail area of Hathazari upazila here today.

The wagons, which were carrying 75 tonnes of furnace oil for Hathazari 100MW Peaking Power Plant, derailed near the plant around 2:30 pm and fell into Chankhali canal. Among the wagons, oil from one of the wagons went down into the canal.

The Chankhali canal is directly linked to the world famous Halda River, the
lone source of natural carp breeding in South Asia.

It is also raising concerns over a possible oil spill into the Halda River.

Ruhul Amin, Upazila Nirbari Officer (UNO) of Hathazari, told BSS that one
tanker coach fell into the Chankhali canal in Egromail area of Hathazari
upazila.

The district administration has started to give embankment on the Chankhali
canal so that no oil can spill into the Halda River, he added.
