Sheikh Jamal’s birthday observed

DHAKA, April 28, 2019 (BSS)- The 66th birthday of Sheikh Jamal, son of
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today
throughout the country in a befitting manner.

To mark the day, Awami League (AL), its associate bodies chalked out
elaborate programmes including placing of wreaths at his graveyard,
recitation from the Holy Quran, offering milad and doa mahfil and discussion.

As part of the programmes, AL leaders and workers paid rich tributes to
Sheikh Jamal, a freedom fighter, by placing wreath at his Banani grave in the
morning today.

AL Acting General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Joint General Secretary
Advocate Jahanagir Kabir Nanak, Organising Secretary AKM Enamul Haque Shamim
and Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi were present on the
occasion, among others.

Later, Awami Jubo League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Mahila Awami League,
Awami Swechchhasebak League, Jubo Mahila League, Jatiya Sramik League and
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, different other political, social and cultural
organizations placed wreaths at the grave.

Following the paying of homage, Qurankhawani, milad and doa mahfil was
held seeking eternal peace of the soul.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote arranged a discussion at its Gulshan Central
Office with acting president Sarah Begum Kabari in the chair.

Born on April 28 in 1954 at Tungipara in Gopalganj, Sheikh Jamal did his
matriculation from Dhaka Residential Model College and intermediate from
Dhaka College. He joined the 1971 War of Liberation.

While studying at Dhaka College, Jamal traveled to Yugoslavia for
military training under the auspices of the Yugoslav army. Subsequently, he
received training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Great Britain.
He joined the Bangladesh Army as a Commissioned Officer.

Jamal was also a noted cricketer. He was also fond of music and used to
play guitar.

On August 15 in 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of
independent Bangladesh, with most of his family members including Sheikh
Jamal, was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers.
Bangabandhu’s two daughters – incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and
his sister Sheikh Rehana – escaped the carnage as they were abroad at that
time.
